HbA1C – What is it and how it is used

HbA1C levels and their meaning

HbA1c provides a longer-term trend, similar to an average, of how high your blood sugar levels have been over a period of time. High HbA1C levels indicate poorer control of diabetes than normal ranges. HbA1c can indicate people with prediabetes or diabetes as follows:

HbA1C %Indicative diabetic control
Below 6.0%Normal
6.0 % – 6.4%Pre-diabetes
6.5% and aboveDiabetes

The HbA1c target for most people with type 1 diabetes is 6.5% or lower. However, do follow your doctor’s recommendations in the target specific for you. Your doctor will help you determine the steps you need to take to successfully manage diabetes.

I grew up on fast food and was overweight for my entire youth. My wake-up call was a couple of years back when I watched both my parents go through the travails of getting diagnosed as diabetic and hypertensives. Since then, my passion has been learning and following the nuances of healthy living. I am now a firm believer in the natural and organic food movement. I believe that we have the power to change our relationship with our health by focusing on what we eat. I exercise regularly and eat sensibly… two key factors that I believe are essential for great health.
